After the successful completion of a first Thai Massage course in 2007, this month I have attended the Advanced course at Wat Po Traditional Thai Massage School. This school is the original teaching centre for these ancient techniques of healing and health, based upon a fusion of traditional Chinese and Indian methods that create the distinctive approach of Thai body work.
The Advanced Thepeutic Massage course combines both theory elements (anatomy, physiology, history, etc.) with intensive practical skills teaching over 60 hours covering manipulative therapies for all the major joint, muscle and physical problems occurring in the human body, including:
- tension, stress and headaches
- problems with the shoulder, elbow and wrist joints
- back and hip pain, including stresses from walking, lifting and bending
- leg, knee, ankle and foot problems
These techniques involve massage, accupressure, manipulation, stretching and soothing. All the work is done by the masseurs fingers and hands - no oil is involved. This means that the client can remain clothed throughout, in loose-fitting clothing. The therapeutic massage works deep into the muscles along key energy lines throughout the body to generate restorative blood flow, relief of inflammation, and an overall loosening of the affected joints and muscles.
These techniques will now be integrated in my massage and body work practice in Keswick for clients, both locals and visitor. Most of the demand so far has been from clients seeking stress and tension reduction, muscle easing (particularly leg soreness after walking or exercising) and the relief of joint difficulties. A health assessment is conducted before any massage to determine any contra-indications.
